Explore the captivating history of mining in the region at the Mining Museum Bad Bleiberg. The museum showcases a diverse collection of exhibits sourced from both the former Mining Museum in Klagenfurt and various lenders, illustrating the unique heritage of mining and its significance for the local culture.
When was the museum established?
The museum was established in 2021 with the acquisition and transportation of objects from the Klagenfurt Mining Museum. The building's renovation and interior design were undertaken by volunteer members of the Mining Cultural Association from 2022 to 2023. The official opening took place on June 24, 2023.
What exhibits can be found in the museum? The museum's exhibits are carefully curated to provide insight into the mining history of Bad Bleiberg. Highlights include the world's only lead cult wagon and replicas of famous lead figures from the Hallstatt-era burial mounds near Rosegg. Additionally, various lead objects such as lead pipes, typefaces for printing, historical mining maps, and mining tools are on display.
A special section of the museum is dedicated to Saint Barbara, the patron saint of mining. A mineral and ore collection offers insight into the appearance of lead ore and its accompanying minerals. Visitors can also experience a scene featuring original furniture from the last office of the Mining Directorate in Klagenfurt, along with an information panel detailing the history of thermal water sourced from the former mining operations.
Among the museum's curiosities is the Bleiberg shell marble, sought after in the 18th century as a valuable material for art objects due to its opalescent appearance in various colors. The museum also showcases 2500 kg of Bleiberg lead ingots as an impressive testament to the mining industry's output.
